Three, Five, Seven or More was the first conference of the Cornerstone Society, therefore something of an experiment. Just under 200 brethren attended in Lodge Room Number 1 at Freemasons Hall in London and were treated to a sequence of talks on masonic subjects ranging from the symbolism of the first degree through to the practices of medaeval masons. Several of the talks were illustrated with slides, or punctuated with quotations and poetry. Many of the talks linked together to reinforce points made by previous speakers, giving an overall impression of harmony, beauty and order. Packed Lunches were served in paper bags and many delegates took advantage of the sun to picnic in Lincolns Inn Fields during the lunch break. Those that didn't wander off were able to explore the several stalls that were set up in the ante-room, ranging from books to specialised regalia. The day continued with a lively debate about the history of Freemasonry and how it should be developing in future. Calls for masonry to be more spiritual and contemplative in aspect, and to drop some of its more stuffy attitudes, were met with a surprising amount of support although there were dissenting voices. Proceedings were rounded off with a Ritual Workshop where part of the First Degree ceremony was performed, set to music and with a narration providing commentary as to the meaning and function of what was happening and how it best could be communicated for the benefit of the candidate. We went home with music ringing in our ears and the message from those who attended was one of overwhelming praise and demand for more Cornerstone conferences, both in London, in the Provinces and in other countries, all of which will happen, as shown by the popular Manchester Conference of November 2001. |
